Billboard Top 200 / Country Album Chart News (Chart issue week of May 5, 2018)

The Billboard 200 chart measures multi-metric album consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

NEWS: Billboard Finalizes Changes to How Streams Are Weighted for Billboard Hot 100 & Billboard 200
The Billboard 200 will now include two tiers of on-demand audio streams. TIER 1: paid subscription audio streams (equating 1,250 streams to 1 album unit) and TIER 2: ad-supported audio streams (equating 3,750 streams to 1 album unit).
Streams from trial subscriptions that offer the same access and functionality as a paid tier will be considered TIER 1. At this juncture, the Billboard 200 will continue to not incorporate video streams.
The shift to a multi-level streaming approach to Billboard’s chart methodology is reflective of a global push to measure streams in a revenue-reflective and access-based manner. Music is now being consumed on streaming services in more diverse ways, migrating from a pure on-demand experience to a more diverse selection of listening preferences (including playlists and radio) and the various options in which a consumer can access music differs based on their subscription commitment.

J. Cole Claims Fifth No. 1 Album on Billboard 200 Chart & Biggest Week of 2018 With 'KOD'
Set logged biggest week of the year in overall units and third-largest streaming week ever.
J. Cole’s fifth studio album, KOD, roared in at No.1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart (BB200) with 2018’s biggest week for an album, as the set earned 397,000 equivalent album units in the week ending April 26, according to Nielsen Music. It also notched the largest streaming week of the year, and the third-largest streaming week ever (322.7 million first-week on-demand audio streams).
That surpassed 2018’s previous largest week, registered when Justin Timberlake’s Man of the Woods bowed at No. 1 with 293,000 units on the chart dated Feb. 17. KOD logged the biggest week for any album since Taylor Swift’s reputation started atop the tally dated Dec. 2, 2017 with 1.238 million units.
KOD is J. Cole’s fifth consecutive No. 1 on the Billboard 200, following his four previous studio sets: 4 Your Eyez Only (2016), 2014 Forest Hills Drive (2014), Born Sinner (2013), and Cole World: The Sideline Story (2011).

Jason Aldean with REARVIEW TOWN fell from No.1 to No. 5 in its second week, earning 38,000 units (down 79 percent)

Record Store Day 2018 broke many sales records and proved that U.S. vinyl sales are not tapering off any time soon. The 733,000 LPs sold during Record Store Day week 2018 set an all-time high, according to Nielsen Music.
Independent record stores set other all-time Record Store Day week highs including Vinyl LPs sold, at 580,000; industry share of physical album sales in a week, at 39%; and total albums sold (all formats), at 799,000 albums, the highest non-holiday week sales total since July 2005.
Bruce Springsteen’s Greatest Hits, David Bowie’s Welcome To The Blackout (Live in London ’78) and Neil Young’s Tonight’s The Night Live At The Roxy, topped the charts of Top RSD Exclusive Albums at Independent Record Stores.

Billboard Top Country Albums (Chart issue week of May 5, 2018)
Top Country Albums now ranks the most popular country albums of the week, as compiled by Nielsen Music, based on multi-metric consumption (blending traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA)).
10 digital track sales from an album = 1 track equivalent album (TEA) “sale”
1,500 on demand song streams from an album to one streaming equivalent album (SEA) “sale”.
Nielsen Music compiles the sales and streaming data. Billboard continues to publish pure album sales charts (subscription to billboard biz ), exclusively comprising Nielsen’s sales data.

Jason Aldean with REARVIEW TOWN (Macon/Broken Bow Records) held at No.1 (1-5 Billboard 200) selling 24,266 copies (down 85%; 2-week total 186,800).

The sibling duo Brothers Osborne earn a new best peak on the ranking.
Brothers Osborne with their sophomore set, PORT SAINT JOE, arrived at No.2 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart (No.15 Billboard 200; dated May 5), earning 22,000 equivalent album units in its first week, ending April 26, according to Nielsen Music. Of the sum, 18,618 were tallied via traditional album sales.

The 10-song set, produced by Jay Joyce, followed the duo's first full-length, PAWN SHOP, which debuted and peaked at No. 3 on the Top Country Albums (#17 Billboard 200; list dated Feb. 6, 2016) with 20,900 copies sold, the act's strongest sales week.
The twosome (siblings T. J. and John Osborne) previously released a self-titled EP, which started and peaked at No. 23 (Sept. 27, 2014).
Port Saint Joe's lead single, "Shoot Me Straight," which Brothers Osborne wrote with Lee Thomas Miller, hit a new peak, leaping 41-29, on Hot Country Songs. On Country Airplay, it climbed 37-35, increasing 3 percent to 3.9 million impressions.
John and TJ Osborne co-wrote all 10 tracks on PORT SAINT JOE, along with frequent collaborators Lee Thomas Miller, Kendall Marvel, Barry Dean, Shane McAnally and Troy Verges.
On April 15, Brothers Osborne won the vocal duo of the year trophy at the 53rd Annual Academy of Country Music Awards, marking their second year in a row receiving the honour.

Critical reception for Brothers Osborne’s Port Saint Joe:
10 Tracks/ Time: 37:56 Amazon UK - UK iTunes - Amazon.com

Allmusic (Rating; 4 STARS) Reuniting with producer Jay Joyce, the duo don't radically revise their sound but rather choose to deepen it, letting themselves stretch out on the thick Southern rock groove of "Shoot Me Straight," indulging in a bit of steamy soul on "A Little Bit Trouble," and delving into deep country on "Tequila Again." .... From its surface to its bones, it's clever, smart, adventurous, and hooky, creating a slow-rolling good-time vibe that doesn't lose its luster with repeated plays.

Sounds Like Nashville (Rating: Very Positive) On Port Saint Joe, Brothers Osborne prove exactly why they are the reigning ACM and CMA Vocal Duo of the Year. Their standout musicianship and powerful lyrics heard throughout the album make for a memorable and unique experience that only continues to grow with each listen.

Louder Sound (Rating: 3 Stars) The countrified R&B of Slow Your Roll carries echoes of Chris Stapleton, as does Weed, Whiskey And Willie. And while they tend to over-rely on Nashville’s standard lyrical tropes, the Osbornes excel on harder-rocking tunes like Shoot Me Straight, which morphs into a dazzling showcase for John’s guitar mastery.

Former 9 non-consecutive week No.1 Kane Brown with his SELF-TITLED held at No.3 (#19-20 Billboard 200) selling 4,681 copies (73-week total 374,800).

Critical reception for Old Crow Medicine Show’s Volunteer:
11 Tracks/ Time: 37:50 Amazon UK - UK iTunes - Amazon.com

Allmusic (Rating: 4.1/2 Stars) Nothing here is particularly outside the wheelhouse of Old Crow Medicine Show, but the songs are finely etched and the performances vivid, elements that separate Volunteer from its predecessors. Here, Old Crow Medicine Show feel focused and fully realized, as if they're just hitting their stride after two decades in the business.

Pop Matters (Rating: 80/100) There isn't a single clunker among these 11 songs, which makes the record an easy, fun listen from start to finish even as the mood changes considerably from track to track.
Uncut (Rating: 80/100) ...With Dave Cobb's production reinforcing their boisterous dynamism, Volunteer surveys the sacrifices Old Crow make for their music, the camaraderie of the bandmates and heroes at the expense of the stability of family and home

American Songwriter (Rating: 3 STARS) Despite a few missteps, Volunteer is a worthy next chapter for a group that continues do its best work when finding new ways to tell old stories.

Critical reception for Ashley Monroe’s Sparrow:
 12 Tracks/ Time: 43:15 Pop Singer/Songwriter Amazon UK - UK iTunes - Amazon.com "Wild Love" (>> Music Video)

Your Life In A Song Shannon Hynes (Rating; Very Postive)...To be honest, it’s a burning question on everyone’s mind, ‘how is Ashley Monroe going to top Grammy nominated album The Blade?’ Yes, we’ve all been thinking it since ‘Sparrow’ was announced to be released on the upcoming 20thApril. Well, let me tell you, I think she’s actually gone and done it. Sparrow is painstakingly, heart achingly, flawless.....The songs on the album showcase everything Ashley has spoken about openly and admitted she has struggled with, such as her father’s death that shook her early childhood. ‘Daddy, I told you’ and ‘This Heaven’ ......... Ashley Monroe is special, you must listen to Sparrow, it’s an album made up of the deepest parts of her soul and we’re so lucky she lets us in.

Slant Magazine (Rating: 4 STARS) Since the release of 2015's The Blade, Ashley Monroe lost her father and gave birth to a son—so it's no surprise that family matters, and family as a source of conflicting emotions, loom large over Sparrow. The singer-songwriter's fourth
album reckons with tangled genealogies and troubled pasts; throughout, Monroe's characters grieve their losses, count their scars, and try to heal. Working with producer Dave Cobb, Monroe has created a sonic palette to help translate those vivid feelings into expressive, visceral music. While Cobb is best known for the analog austerity he's brought to albums by Chris Stapleton and Jason Isbell, he and Monroe sought inspiration in the syrupy strings of classic “countrypolitan” on Sparrow.
Yet while Monroe and Cobb draw inspiration from the lush, orchestral country of the 1960s, Sparrow is no throwback. Songs like “Rita” use cinematic orchestrations to evoke the dusty, widescreen pop of Tumbleweed Connection-era Elton John, but the lush melancholy of “Orphan” resembles the more contemporary, moody chamber-pop of Beck's Sea Change. ...Monroe is unparalleled at fusing classicist country songwriting with a modern sheen, something she proved on The Blade, which deftly balances traditional country sounds with bubbly pop. With Sparrow, she's topped even that achievement, creating a rich and emotional album that feels deeply connected to the past but also fully engaged with the present.

Rocking Magpie - Honest, Classy, Contemporary and Heart-string Tugging Album..................My own favourite track is a bit left of centre by this album’s standards, as Keys to the Kingdom which closes the record is quite Rootsy and painfully raw at times, which is just how I like my singer-songwriters; and when the string section finally come in it’s like a dessert wind and closes proceedings just perfectly…SPARROW is wonderful concept from Ashley Monroe, carefully and shrewdly steering her away from the Pop-Rock that is the norm in Nashville these days and concentrating not just her marvelous singing voice but her rather excellent songwriting too. I expect this album to surpass the Grammy Nominations of recent years too.

Former No.1 Blake Shelton with TEXOMA SHORE (Warner Bros. Nashville | WMN) fell 13-22 (#94-160 Billboard 200) selling 1,884 copies (25-week total 222,900)

Former No.1 Scotty McCreery, with SEASONS CHANGE (Triple Tigers/RED) fell 21-24 (#147-171 BB200) selling 2,938 copies (6-week total 59,500)

Outside the Top 25

Various Artists with RESTORATION: Reimagining the Songs of Elton John and Bernie Taupin (HST Global/MCA Nashville/Universal Music Group Nashville) fell 14-39 selling 3,200 copies (3-week total 21,700).

Maren Morris with HERO (Columbia Nashville | SMN) fell 18-28 (#96-week total 285,000)
