Billboard Top 200 / Country Album Chart News (Chart issue week of April 28, 2018)

The Billboard 200 chart measures multi-metric album consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA).

Jason Aldean Bundles His Way to a Billboard 200 No.1
Jason Aldean with eighth studio full-length, REARVIEW TOWN (Macon/Broken Bow/BMG/Broken Bow Music Group), launched atop the all-genre Billboard Top 200 Album Chart (BB200) and Top Country Albums charts (dated April 28) with 183,000 equivalent album units in the week ending April 19, according to Nielsen Music. Of that amount, 162,500 were traditional album sales.

Produced by Michael Knox, Rearview Town is the first country LP to top the Billboard 200 in 2018, and the first since Luke Bryan’s WHAT MAKES YOU COUNTRY topped the Dec. 30, 2017-dated tally. Additionally, it netted the largest week for a country studio album in units and sales since Chris Stapleton’s From A Room: Volume 1, which bowed with 219,000 units (202,000 in album sales) on May 27, 2017.

Aldean’s new set also logged the largest week, both in terms of total units and traditional album sales, for a country title since Kenny Chesney’s live effort Live in No Shoes Nation launched at No. 1 with 219,000 units (of which 216,804  were in album sales) on the Nov. 18, 2017 chart. Like Chesney’s album, Aldean’s release was boosted by sales generated from a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer with his upcoming tour, which starts on May 10.
The cost of the album is bundled into the price of each ticket sold online for a tour. After purchasing a ticket, customers received (via email) a redemption offer for the album, where they could choose to redeem the CD and have it mailed to them.
Others aided by a concert ticket/album bundle sale redemption promotion marketing strategy in 2017 were:
Tim McGraw and Faith Hill with THE REST OF OUR LIFE (104,000 units, 98,351 were in traditional album sales; second week sales down 68%).
Shania Twain debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart (BB200) with NOW (137,000 equivalent album units;
134,268 were in traditional album sales; second week sales down 90%, the pre-orders and Internet ticket bundling tour offer comprised 115,211 Non-traditional (ticket bundle purchases + others) in the first week)

For Aldean, who won the Entertainer Of The Year trophy at the 53rd annual Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards on April 15, Town marked his fourth Billboard 200 No.1. It’s his sixth leader on Top Country Albums and fifth album to debut at No.1, following They Don’t Know, which opened atop the list dated Oct. 1, 2016, with 131,000 copies sold; Old Boots, New Dirt (Oct. 25, 2014, 278,000); Night Train (Nov. 3, 2012, 409,000); and Relentless (June 16, 2007, 982,000, marking Aldean’s biggest sales week). His other Top Country Albums No. 1, My Kinda Party, debuted at No. 2 on Nov. 20, 2010 (with 193,000 sold) and hit No. 1 on Feb. 19, 2011.

Rock band Breaking Benjamin earned its fourth top 10 effort with Ember, as it debuts at No. 3 with 88,000 units (of which 80,000 were in traditional album sales). The band’s last release, 2015’s Dark Before Dawn, opened at No. 1 with 141,000 units (135,000 in album sales), securing the group its first leader on the list. (Like Rearview Town, Ember benefits from a ticket/album sale redemption offer.)

Singer-songwriter John Prine logged his highest-charting album ever, and first top 10, as THE TREE OF FORGIVENESS bows at No.5 with 54,000 units (53,100 in traditional album sales). The album is his first release album of his own new songs since 2005’s FAIR AND SQUARE. The new set got a big boost from sales driven by a concert ticket/album sale redemption offer, which helps yield the two-time Grammy Award winner his best sales week since Nielsen Music began tracking sales in 1991. (Prine has been charting on the Billboard 200 since 1972.)
Prine earned his previous best on the Billboard 200 with his last album, 2016’s For Better, Or Worse, which debuted and peaked at No.30.

Billboard Top Country Albums (Chart issue week of April 28, 2018)
Top Country Albums now ranks the most popular country albums of the week, as compiled by Nielsen Music, based on multi-metric consumption (blending traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA), and streaming equivalent albums (SEA)).
10 digital track sales from an album = 1 track equivalent album (TEA) “sale”
1,500 on demand song streams from an album to one streaming equivalent album (SEA) “sale”.
Nielsen Music compiles the sales and streaming data. Billboard continues to publish pure album sales charts (subscription to billboard biz ), exclusively comprising Nielsen’s sales data.

Jason Aldean Notches Fourth Straight #1 Album, As 'Rearview Town' Opens With 183,000
Jason Aldean with REARVIEW TOWN, released on April 13 via Macon/Broken Bow Records, launches with 183,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending April 19, according to Nielsen Music, of which 162,500 were in traditional album sales.
Aldean is just the second country act to send four consecutive studio releases to the top. Rascal Flatts also claimed four No.1 studio sets in a row between 2004 and 2009: Feels Like Today, Me and My Gang, Still Feels Good and Unstoppable. (Between Still and Unstoppable, the trio clocked a No. 6-peaking set with the best-of package Greatest Hits Volume 1.)

Jason Aldean earns his third No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart with arrival of They Don’t Know. The set, which was released on Sept. 9 through Macon/Broken Bow Records, earned 138,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Sept. 15, according to Nielsen Music. Of that sum, 131,000 were in traditional album sales.

Critical reception for Jason Aldean’s Rearview Town: (Broken Bow Records)
15 Tracks/ Time: 46:52 Amazon UK - UK iTunes - Amazon.com

As he "flaunts his rich, robust vocals" (The Musical Hype) throughout REARVIEW TOWN, the "seasoned superstar's" (Entertainment Weekly) hard-charging and ferociously confident album has already received critical attention ahead of release.

As he "savors his ACM Entertainer of the Year hat trick" (Hits Daily Double), fans and critics rally behind REARVIEW TOWN for its "relatable premise," (Huffington Post).

"It's utterly serious in tone, as if enjoying weekend downtime to the fullest – in an almost nihilistic fashion – is a moral obligation, and it's another fine example of the empathetic approach Aldean has taken toward working-class life and Middle America." - Rolling Stone

"The record is full of the same swaggering, emotion-driven country rock that earned him a spot as one of the top live performers in the current Country landscape." - UPROXX

“…it often feels as though Aldean is reaching for very common comforts to get his way through very specific pain. And this is, of course, Country music’s great power." - The Atlantic

"The album is a straight-up shot of what has kept Aldean fans rocking through his previous seven studio albums – high-octane songs ready-made for his arena and stadium shows." - PEOPLE

"Surprising fans for almost a decade after his genre-bending breakthrough smash 'She's Country,' Aldean still revels in surprising fans and pushing the boundaries of Country music." - USA Today

"Twelve years after Aldean helped recenter the genre, these sounds aren’t novel in Country music. This is Aldean’s world; he inhabits it more convincingly than most." – Paste

AllMusic (Rating: 3.1/2 STARS) In many respects, Rearview Town is simply another sturdy Jason Aldean album -- "High Noon Neon," its meditative closer, could bleed into "Lights Come On," the opener from 2016's They Don't Know, and nobody could tell a different album had started -- but in subtle ways, the record reveals a singer who is beginning to feel out his middle age…. he lays into the classic soul trappings of "You Make It Easy" without a hitch, suggesting that Rearview Town may one day be seen as something more than another reliable Aldean album. Instead, it could wind up being the first chapter of his second act.

“Whether he’s trying to be an 80s rocker or a 00s hip-hopper, it just all sounds wrong and I struggled to find a single track that if I heard it on the radio I wouldn’t want to change channels immediately...Either way I’d say avoid this at all costs unless you’re a diehard fan...Duncan Warwick (1 STAR Country Music People)

John Prine with THE TREE OF FORGIVENESS made a bow at No.2 (#5 Billboard 200) selling 53,100 copies in traditional album sales.

Critical reception for John Prine’s The Tree of Forgiveness:
10 Tracks/ Time: 32:51 Folk Amazon UK - UK iTunes - Amazon.com

AllMusic (Rating: 4 Stars) The Tree of Forgiveness is autumnal John Prine, but it's also a potent reminder that his remarkable skills as a songwriter and his rough-hewn excellence as a singer haven't failed him yet.

Rollingstone (Rating: 4 STARS)  Prine was a wiseass and a comedian, sure (his 1971 self-titled debut LP opened with "Illegal Smile," a sly ballad about being stoned).
But it was his gigantic empathy, channeled with casually exacting poetics, that set him apart, that would have him channeling the voice of an aged woman fingering unfairly dashed dreams at the height of the hippie movement....Prine's kept at it steadily, despite a muse evidently grown less insistent, for nearly 50 years, and Tree of Forgiveness is his first set of originals in over a decade. It's produced by Dave Cobb, and it's very good, frequently brilliant, with all the qualities that define Prine's music.

Pitchfork (Rating 7.6)  At 71, John Prine is a virtuoso at understatement, finding the joy in the mundane, and writing about what it means to be alive....This album does not contain a line like “Jesus Christ died for nothin’, I suppose.” It contains lines about porches and washing machines and shadows on ceilings. But in their own quiet, ramshackle ways, they’re about being alive and what it means to be alive. There’s a hard-won wisdom to all these songs, a wisdom that can only come with age, where pork chops can be one of the most important things in the world, where joy and divinity can be found in the everyday, on a porch, looking at clouds.

FALLING SHORT of Top 50:
On the Country Album Sales list (pure sales; old methodology)

Outlaw with 10 track Hip-Hop & Rap BACKWOODS BADASS made a debut at No.16 on Country Sales.
It also debuted at #3 on Heatseeker Albums, #71 on Top Album Sales and #21 on the Digital Albums listing.

Moonlight Social with their 5-track EP MAKE YOU SMILE made a debut at No.49 on Country Sales. It marked their first time on a Billboard chart hitting both Country Album Sales chart and the Heatseekers South Central chart.
They comprise duo (Jennica Scott – Vocals; Jeremy Burchard - Vocals, Music) and reside from Austin, Texas now hanging their hats in Nashville.
It’s not easy uprooting something you’ve grown for years and moving it from comfortable soil to unfamiliar territory. But in the summer of 2016, that’s exactly what Moonlight Social did. Jennica Scott and Jeremy Burchard loaded up the van, a trailer, a few other cars, the dog and the cat, and, with a bittersweet goodbye, put Austin, Texas in the rear view.
